Walt Disney Animation Studios Summer Internship Program is an eight-week experience designed for students studying art, design, animation, computer graphics, graphics engineering, film & media, and production management. As a Walt Disney Animation Studios intern, you will have the unique opportunity to work directly with a Disney mentor as you explore all aspects of art, storytelling, and filmmaking. This immersive program offers hands-on experience focused on individual craft and multidisciplinary team collaboration.

The 2014 Summer Intern program will be held at our Burbank, CA studio starting Monday, TBD, 2014.

Application Requirements:

Animators are responsible for bringing characters (animals and human figures) to life using traditional and digital tools. They work closely with the film’s Directors, Head of Animation, and Animation Supervisors to establish the style of movement and personality for the character.

Reels’ demonstrated skills should include:

  • Acting, Acting, Acting! A reel should consist of a broad range of acting exercises that showcase a strong sense of personality, mechanics, and appeal: pantomime, dialogue, weight
  • Focus on different styles of emotion: subtle as well as broad moments, use of comedy, drama, and subtext
  • Reels should also focus on a diversity of character personalities to create entertaining and emotionally driven believable performances
  • Uploaded digital or online reel submissions preferred
  • Both CG and Traditional Animators encouraged to apply!

Modelers build complex 3D models including organic characters and articulated set and prop models. These artists work with a team of artists, including Visual Development Artists and Character TDs to interpret designs, and build and refine models for production.

  • Experience with Facial Modeling
  • Scripting (MEL, PERL, CSH) background a plus
  • Previous experience with traditional 3D sculpting a plus
  • Knowledge of anatomy a plus
  • Problem solving skills and a good eye required

Story Artists translate story ideas into visual sequences. By working with other members of the production team, they will develop the cinematography and staging of the film; choosing initial camera placement and angles; defining action and camera movement. They must also convey the essence of storyline, scene structure, character emotion, and create action and humor in alignment with the overall direction of the film.

  • Versatile range of character-driven story sequences preferred. Showcase through a variety of genres and conveyed emotion including: comedy, action, romance, suspense, drama, musical
  • Sequences do not need to be a full film in length but should have a clear beginning, middle, and end
  • Strong understanding of acting and entertainment value
  • Life Drawings required
  • Sketchbook samples, animal zoo drawings required
  • Character moments helpful
  • Caricatures helpful
  • Uploaded multipage PDF portfolios or digital animatics preferred

These artists have a rich imagination, a sense of caricature, color, design, anatomy, and architecture, the ability to work in different mediums, and the versatility to conceptualize visually in a variety of techniques.

As a Production Management Intern you’ll provide day-to-day administrative and project support of animation production, including, but not limited to, organizing a production schedule, organizing crew meetings, creating and maintaining reports, and assisting in the preparation of screenings and presentations. You’ll learn about the process of producing an animated film and gain familiarity with the techniques and tools used by our production management teams.
