THE THEME:
The plans for The Smalls Film Festival 2013 are well underway and we have some exciting events (and surprises) in store. Submissions are now open (http://www.thesmalls.com/festival) and already films from all over the world are pouring in.

This year we decided it would be fun to play around with a theme -something that brings it all together. As ambitious supporters of independent filmmaking, this is where the idea began, in simple enough terms: We are The Smalls and we want to go MEGA!

With mega on the mind, and filmmaking of course, we had a think about the ways these ideas collide. To be able to express a singular vision, to become big, and to become immortal -that is every aspiring artist or director’s dream. To achieve this requires an unfaltering commitment to your ideas and a willingness to fight for them with a frenzied mania: MEGALOMANIA.

We are looking to commission an indie filmmaker to create a Smalls promo video (no longer than a minute) for our festival that represents this year’s theme of megalomania.

We will give you our copy to be included and our logo and the rest is up to you. We’ve included a moodboard of visual references to give you an idea of where we’re heading with this. It can be a very short story, a series of visual stimuli or something more abstract. Set your inner megalomania free!

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATORS

- Candidates should have a portfolio showing flexibility in various 2D techniques. Competency in creating background artwork using a painterly approach, with a strong grasp of composition, staging, colour styling and lighting.

- Substantial experience designing props and creating assets in varying styles.

- Experience working in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is essential, preferably on a broadcast series or film production.

- Must work with the Director and Art Director to create Key and Intermediate Backgrounds following the established style, based on conceptual artwork and layout designs.

- Effectively communicate progress, maintain style and quality within the constraints of a production schedule deadline, while adhering to an established pipeline.

2D DIGITAL ANIMATORS

- Candidates must have proven experience of 2D character driven animation. Preferably on broadcast series or film production.

- Experience using Adobe AfterEffects, but candidates with experience in CelAction or Flash will also be considered.

- Candidates will have a thorough understanding of traditional animation principles and a proven ability of applying them to a digital asset-driven medium.

- Must have the ability to take direction to create a character driven performance and adapt to various stylistic approaches.

- Good interpersonal skills. Must work proficiently within the constraints of a production schedule to given deadlines/quotas and have the ability for a fast turnaround on animation revisions issued.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who are residents of Northern Ireland. Due to funding restrictions we are limited in the number of candidates we could consider from outside of NI. Remote work will be considered. The position:
You will be working on various short and long format productions and we expect you to lead a team of foreign and Thai artists and occasionally liaise with European and North American Producers & Directors. You will be responsible for leading and supervising the team, and ensuring the delivery of high quality animation on schedule and budget.
You are expected to have the ability to cast the right animator for any specific task both to ensure performances and to develop the skillset of the animators.A challenging full time job with an international multicultural company in growth and the opportunity to work on some of the biggest high-profile CG television productions in the world.You will be assigning, guiding, supervising and reviewing the work of the animators and constantly have focus on it being consistent with the expected style and quality.

This will be quickly evolving into a leadership position, so you must be either highly experienced, or highly talented.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Work well in a highly collaborative environment with other animators, designers, and programmers, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and take direction well.
• Successfully implement character animation assets using all the necessary tools including proprietary software. Must be a technically able developer.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience, covering all basic animation principles and techniques.
• It is a plus if you have experience working with motion capture to create cinematic performances that go beyond the underlying motion capture, and exude personality.
• A proven ability to create great modeling and animation sequences.
• Ability and desire to learn & assist in building internal proprietary software.
• A strong sense of composition, animation timing, and basic storytelling.
• Be adaptable, flexible and accepting of change, often tossing out ideas and starting anew.
• A current, updated reel showcasing your work.
• Have Knowledge of cinematic language and camera terminology.
• Any knowledge or experience with building educational apps for kids is a big plus!

Other Skills:

• Advanced and demonstrated understanding of basic animation principles including squash and stretch, timing and motion, anticipation, staging, weight, and appeal. A fundamental understanding of, and desire to create animation content for kids.
