Job Description

The Department of Art + Design invites applications for a new full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Animation and Visual Effects to begin August 1, 2023.

APSU offers a BFA Art degree with a concentration in Animation and Visual Effects, which is a growing program that seeks to prepare our diverse students for active engagement and collaboration within the animation, film, and entertainment industries.

The APSU Department of Art + Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and offers BFA and BA degrees with concentrations in Studio Art, Graphic Design, Animation and Visual Effects, Art History, and Art Education. The department consists of sixteen full-time faculty, three support staff, and twelve part-time instructors who celebrate the mission of teaching and innovation in serving 200+ undergraduate majors. Three on-campus galleries support the Art + Design programs and the growing art community in nearby Nashville provides ample opportunities for professional and student exhibitions. In Fall of 2017 the Department moved into a new $21.3 million dollar, 46,000 square feet Art + Design Building, featuring custom studio space for all concentrations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach courses at all levels within the Animation + Visual Effects curriculum, and relevant courses within the department;
  • Advise and mentoring students in their course of studies and individual research;
  • Shared oversight of the Animation + Visual Effects Studio, equipment, materials;
  • Shared oversight of the Animation + Visual Effects curriculum and programming;
  • Collaborating with fellow faculty within and across departments and participating in
  • APSU’s shared governance;
  • Continued engagement in ongoing creative research and professional activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • The ideal candidate has experience within several areas of our current course content which includes: 2D animation, 3D animation, Digital 3D, Visual Effects, Collaborative Studio Production, and Thesis Development. Candidates should be knowledgeable in the history and implementation of a variety of animation and visual effects techniques and mediums, and a forward thinking commitment to future industry trends and technology.
  • The primary software in the classroom consists of: Autodesk Maya, ToonBoom Harmony, Adobe Creative Cloud, Foundry Nuke, and Dragonframe. Ideal candidate also has experience in additional software such as Zbrush, Substance Painter, Houdini, orUnity/Unreal.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • M.F.A. in Animation and/or Visual Effects, or related field by August 1, 2023.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) years of industry experience and/or teaching experience and/or other relevant post-graduate experience.
