We are looking for a talented and experienced Lighting & Shading Technical Director to work in our CGI department at Gas Ferry Road.
The CGI department is involved principally in the production of commercials, and occasionally broadcast and short films. It is also involved in the CG aspects of Aardman’s Features slate.
You will be expected to provide support across the department in lighting/rendering and shading. Setting up lighting/shading workflow and providing complete lit shots on all CGI productions including commercials, short films and stings.
You should be highly proficient in Maya (including experience of MEL & Python scripting). Also, you should have an in-depth knowledge of Renderman (writing shaders in SL, RIB debugging , RMS usage and configuration) and must have experience in a production environment. You will also need proven compositing skills (After Effects, Fusion, Nuke). Experience in other areas of CG production would be a bonus.
You should be highly creative in both technical and artistic problem solving, with a positive and pro-active approach. We’d also expect you to be supportive and team focused , with strong communication skills. For more info, please see the attached job description.

Description:
The Lead Character Modeller’s primary role is to create high detail 3d character assets for ongoing projects and to provide direction and leadership to other character artists working within the studio or remotely. Given the lead role this will entail being able to assess the work being done on character assets by other artists and to give relevant and accurate feedback where required in order to maintain quality of character work across the board, and there is an expectation for the successful candidate(s) to be actively involved in advancing the general work standards of the studio.
The Lead Character Modeller will work alongside the Project Director to make sure characters are being created in line with the Director’s vision and any supplied references or concept art. The position also requires close liaison with the rigging department to ensure character assets adhere to technical specifications required by skinning and other deformation processes
Responsibilities:
- Create exceptional character models to the highest standard, using Maya, Modo and z-brush software packages
- Produce photorealistic and stylised models based on client briefs, concept art and under guidance from project directors
- Oversee and lead the work of other modellers (both on and off-site) in order to ensure that models produced meet the highest standard of work and adhere to technical specifications
- Proactively anticipate, find a resolve any issues with character assets or models
- Take a lead role in the ongoing development of character and organic modelling pipelines and processes within the studio
- Work closely with Rigging TDs to ensure all character models meet requirements from a rigging and technical performance perspective.
- Work with production management to prioritise tasks and to help breakdown initial project asset and task requirements
- Take responsibility for progressing the studio’s standards of work as part of a team of dedicated artists and TD’s
Requirements:
We require potential candidates to have:
- Degree level qualification in a relevant field (eg fine art, design)
- The above requirement may be waived for candidates who can demonstrate exceptional skill and/or have equivalent work experience
- 3+ years professional experience creating character models using maya/xsi/lightwave/modo or similar
- 2+ years experience sculpting very high detail models in z-brush and/or mudbox
- A high level of skill in traditional mediums (ie drawing, clay sculpting, etc)
- A detailed understanding of human anatomy
- Good communication skills, including good spoken and written English
- A team-orientated, positive and achievement focused attitude
- Ability to adapt to existing pipeline and tools
- Ability to produce high quality work to strict deadlines
- References from former employers and or colleagues

Glasgow Studio is looking for a Lightwave Jnr
Glasgow Studio is looking for a Lightwave Jnr to join our team working on an animated children’s television series.
This role involves assembling, rendering and basic comping of 9 minute episodes and relies on broad knowledge and understanding more often than it does on detailed specifics.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of Lightwave and Lightwave methodologies (such as the use of mdds). Previous experience of this type of process would be advantageous and basic compositing ability is also required. Modeling and texturing skills are not strictly necessary but will prove useful.
The successful applicant must be able to manage their time and workload efficiently, trouble shoot problems which arise, work on their own initiative and be eager and quick to learn. This position is full time in house for a maximum of 4 months at our Glasgow studio, therefore only local applicants need apply.
