Summary of Job:

Creates the motions, gestures, and expressions of three-dimensional computer graphics characters and objects.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive with each assigned shot: storyboards, story reels, recorded dialogue, set layout, and direction. The Director shows each new sequence in layout and describes what is expected for every shot at a “blocking meeting”
  • Read soundtrack and plan shot
  • Block in movements in rough animation and show for the Director’s approval in a daily review
  • Finish work for Director approval. Finish in a timely manner
  • Attend animation dailies

Requirements

  • Degree or certificate in classical animation, film, or related field, or equivalent production animation experience
  • Must have a DVD demo reel that demonstrates application of the principles of animation to tell a story with meaning through movement
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Must be open to direction and able to embrace change
  • Proven storytelling skills
  • Ability to use acting skills, which bring characters to life, as well as clearly communicate simple ideas with which an audience can empathize
  • Strong understanding of traditional animation principles
  • An art background, which shows a thorough, understanding of physical motion, weight, balance, texture, and form
  • Computer animation experience preferred but not required

Job Description

The 2D Facial Animator creates facial expressions, extremes and phonemes for  stop motion animated characters.  2D designs and animation need to convey emotion, movement, action and personality, specifically focusing on lip sync. This position requires a level of sophistication of technique on a feature film level.

Note: This position will be located on-site at our Studio in Oregon. When sending samples, include a demo reel with 2D Animation lip sync samples, as well as expression sheet and turnarounds.

Essential Job Functions

  • Block in rough facial animation and phonemes for Director and/or Facial Animation Supervisor for their approval.
  • Work with Director and/or Facial Animation Supervisor to finalize animation.
  • Meet animation production deadlines as established by management.
  • Create facial expressions and extremes conveying emotion, movement, action and personality.
  • Read and break down dialogue tracks and plan shots.
  • Work with Directors on creating teeth and skull designs.
  • Work with Facial Animation Supervisor and Director of RP in making sure 2D animations fit within the Stop Motion pipeline

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area of study or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years experience as a 2D Facial Animator in the entertainment industry.
  • Experience working on a fully animated theatrically released Stop Motion and/or CG feature film a plus.
  • Strong understanding of traditional animation principles.
  • Ability to bring characters to life.
  • Stop Motion animation experience a plus.

Position Character Designer – Overall Accountability

To work with the Producers and Art Director to design the show’s main and secondary characters, taking into account any previous designs, styles, directions, and guidance set down by the Producers. Ability to create compelling characters and character scene sketches which can be modeled in 3D, and which serve the goals of the production’s story.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Interface with designers, artists, and programmers.
  • Utilize design experience to design characters which hit the quality bar, and vision of the Producer, Art Director, and the goals of the production.
  • Self-manage and review one’s own schedule, notify production of any tasks that may be missing or improperly specified.
  • Work with Art Director and Lead Character Designer to create playable, enemy, and other NPC characters.

Qualifications

  • 1+ years in Character Designer role (asset, not required, any studio experience is beneficial).
  • BA/BFA Degree in Fine Arts or Commercial Arts Field (asset, not necessarily required).
  • Flair and interest in fashion and style, pop culture.
  • A strong understanding of design and the issues inherent in creating compelling characters for a 3D CGI feature length production, worthy of a theatrical release.
  • Must have strong 2-D character and creature design experience.
  • Experience in multimedia content, film and television work an asset.
  • 3D design and modeling experience an asset.
  • Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Proven abilities in managing projects from concept to completion.

Concept Artist needed for animated short film

Open Book are looking for a talented concept artist to work on an animated short film we are producing. Directed by the renowned tokyoplastic, the film will be developed using stylised 3D with an edge of retro nostalgia.
