Lucasfilm Animation (California) are recruiting… here’s one example – 3D Story Artist

The Mid-level 3D Story Artist works with other artists under the CG Supervisor as part of a team to pre-visualize CG animated television episodes given direction from Supervising and Episodic Directors.
- Under minimal supervision, use and occasionally create, digital assets including character and backgrounds to interpret a script as visualized by the Supervising and/or Episodic director.
- Provide cinematic pre-visualization of Director’s vision by completing layout of 3D animatic level sequences from start to finish using multiple elements based on scripts and input from Director(s).
- Provides other concept artists with underlays and source art created in 3D.
- Tracks shot progress through entire pre-visualization process. Archives all project files, renders, and source images.
- Completes special projects as needed or requested.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.
- 2-3 years experience in feature film or television production
- Extensive training in and/or strong demonstrable understanding of the principles of story-telling, art and film.
- Demonstrated proficiency in scene, shot, camera, and character composition is required.
- Modeling, lighting, texturing and animation experience strongly desired.
- Knowledge of terminology and techniques used in film, animation and visual effects including basic knowledge of photography and camera lenses.
- Demonstrated proficiency using Maya, XSI or 3Ds max required. Proficiency in other applications such as Photoshop and After Effects, as well as familiarity with digital video is highly desired.
- Ability to learn and use new software as needed.
- Ability to work under pressure as well as implement changes based on input from multiple sources.
- Ability to multi-task and work efficiently in a multi-user environment.
- Excellent organizational skills a must.

Entry/Junior Animators [LA]
Needs to Show
* Demo Reel (Quick time on website preferred) of animation that illustrates visual storytelling, believable expressions, emotional states, and entertainment with facial animation.
* Resume and Credit List
Needs To Do
* Work closely with animation leads to create convincing facial performances and motion.
* Follows Supervisor/Leads instructions clearly and carry out notes effectively on shots.
* Be aware of what is happening on the floor at all times – identify problems to the Animation Supervisor.
* Work with Leads to develop expression pose libraries.
* Create solid facial animation for each character based on their role in the script and dialog.
* Deliver shots within deadlines.
* Work with Leads to assess rigs to meet an animator’s need for control, functionality, usability and performance.
* File management – organize work/files efficiently.
Needs To Know
* Entry level to 1+ years relevant experience
* Ability to problem solve and predict potential problems with assigned tasks.
* Knowledge of high end 3D software (particularly Maya, Max, Houdini and XSI are a plus.)
* Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas.
* Excellent multi-tasking and prioritization skills.
* Classical animation background is an asset.
